British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
